*Kablooie* - Social Media Overload?
As I keep adding to my list of networks, websites, and online communities I'm wondering when it will be that my head will explode with too much socialness. Between personal social media fun and professional community managing, on my desk sits two pages of websites, logins, and passwords to remember.
Just for funsies, I googled "How many social networks are there?" and the first thing that came up was a list on Wikipedia of well over 160 social networks. I would think of myself as someone well versed in Social Media (*note, I did NOT use the words guru, expert, maven, rockstar, or ninja to explain my social media prowess) and there's a solid third of that list I had never heard of.
When is enough going to be enough? Will the social media bubble pop? And if for some reason it continues like this, where networks are born everyday - will we just be spread too thin?
Right now Facebook is theoretically the place to be with its 450 million users as a captive audience. As a general user, and not a company, it lets you do pretty much everything. Lets forget for a second that it is awash in privacy issues right now, but it allows you to post status updates about anything, notes, links, pictures, videos - and it groups everything together nicely. The only thing it could do better is probably be a fully functioning email, import things automatically like Google Reader as an RSS, and maybe add some music/art creative apps. So why would you go elsewhere? MySpace isn't very functional, and then there are things like Tumblr that are an alternative, and the up and coming Diaspora.
If your friends start to disperse - will you join multiple networks to keep up with them? How many networks is too many for you?
